3 Ways to Keep Your Dog Active
Your pet is a part of the family. To help them stay healthy, giving your dog the proper nutrition and the right amount of exercise is essential.
If you’re looking for ways to keep your dog active, here are three excellent activities you can do together.
1. Take Your Dog for a Walk or Run
The importance of walking your dog can’t be overstated. It’s essential not only for exercise, but also for socialization. Twice-daily walks or runs are an excellent way to keep your dog active and mentally engaged by experiencing different sights, sounds, smells, and contact with new people and animals. And the time you spend walking your dog will help you bond and allow you to stay fit and healthy, too.
It’s generally best to start with a slow walk, going only a few blocks. Gradually increase the pace and length of each outing as you and your dog become more comfortable walking together. And if you both have the energy and stamina, you might even work up to running.
2. Play Fetch With Your Dog’s Favorite Ball or Toy
Make sure the ball or toy is the right size for your dog’s mouth and teeth. Your dog may have difficulty picking it up if it’s too big. If it’s too small, it could be a choking hazard.
When you first begin playing fetch with your dog, start by tossing the ball or toy a shorter distance. As your dog becomes more comfortable, gradually increase the distance you throw the toy to boost the exercise benefits.
Choose a large area with room for running and jumping. A fenced yard is ideal. In bad weather, move the game indoors and play in a spacious room or hallway.
3. Doggy Playdates
Playdates with a close group of friends on a regular basis to promote socialization without the risks of interacting with unknown dogs is a great way to keep your dog active!
It’s excellent exercise. Sometimes a walk around the neighborhood isn’t enough, especially for energetic large breeds. Being able to have a playdate with other trusted and known dogs benefits all parties involved.
Since your dog will be around other pets, it’s essential that your dog is current on all vaccinations. Flowers Hill Veterinary Hospital is here to help you keep your dog healthy and happy. Contact us to schedule an appointment.
